July 2024- Taane!
It was a joy to meet Taane at the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre in Auckland, where we not only presented him with a certificate but also learned about the incredible journey Taane is on through receiving music therapy at the Centre with his dedicated music therapist, Alex.
Tony, the director of Maddren Homes, observed the entire session and was impressed by Alex's passion, patience, and kindness. He also recognised the unique needs of Taane and witnessed how music therapy can transform a life.
"Every individual is different, and I can see that it is very challenging for Taane to express himself like we do, something we often take for granted. But when he is in the therapy room, those challenges seem to fade away. He is purely enjoying and exploring music with Alex. The room is his safe haven."
🎶 The therapy session begins with Taane picking the instruments for both him and Alex to play. Following Taane's lead, Alex starts to sing and communicate through music. Taane has been focusing intently on his drum, showing his seriousness and dedication, before moving on to the piano and guitar at the very end of the session.
At Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre, it's all about building trust and relationships with their clients, creating connections through music, and helping them gain the confidence to communicate with others. For some clients who are non-speaking, music becomes a bridge to connect with the people around them. Like all music therapists, Alex designs Taane’s sessions to reflect that which has meaning to him, including waiata (songs) that uphold Taane’s culture and mana.
Alex’s dedication has sown a seed in Taane’s heart and is already making small but important changes in Taane’s life. Recently, Taane has started to pick up his guitar at home when he feels uneasy or frustrated, using music as a way to express himself. The sessions at the centre have helped him understand that music doesn’t need to be perfect; it’s a powerful way to express and vent feelings.
Let's be honest, who hasn’t sung out loud while driving alone, expressing their love for a song or releasing pent-up emotions? Some people need a different space and environment to encourage self-expression and emotional release. The Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre provides that safe haven, giving individuals the skills and support they need.
Want to learn more about Raukatauri Music Therapy Trust?
Raukatauri was established in 2004 by singer Dame Hinewehi Mohi to provide music therapy services in Aotearoa. Hinewehi wanted others to be able to experience the life-changing music therapy that her daughter Hineraukatauri, born with cerebral palsy, was able to access during a family trip to London in 1999. 20 years from its founding, the Trust now operates services in Northland, Auckland, Hawke’s Bay and the Bay of Plenty.
The Trust receives no direct Government funding and needs to raise over $2,200,000 this year to keep all of programmes running while also developing new initiatives.

April 2024 - Mia!
Meet Mia, our remarkable winner of the first round of the Maddren Sponsor Project!
At just 9 years old, Mia has been tearing up the BMX tracks alongside her brother Tyler since she was 6. With Tyler's enthusiastic encouragement, Mia found her passion for racing and hasn't looked back since. Currently racing for North Harbour BMX, Mia's journey to success has been nothing short of impressive. Last year, she secured her spot in the UCI BMX World Championship in Rock Hill by clinching third place in the New Zealand BMX Nationals in Tauranga. Representing New Zealand and proudly sporting her Fern uniform, Mia is gearing up to showcase her skills on the international stage on 12th May.
Our director, Tony, had the pleasure of meeting Mia and presenting her with the award. He was immediately struck by Mia's maturity, determination, and infectious energy. "She is definitely very mature for her age, and her determination is remarkable," said Tony. "On the other hand, she is such a lovely, bubbly, and energetic girl." Tony also remarked, "There are a lot of efforts behind the scene from the family to make this happen. It is a family teamwork, and I am impressed with the support they get together as a family."
We're thrilled to support Mia on her journey, and we can't wait to cheer her on as she races towards success!
